It is the middle of the night and there is no moonlight. You look out over the illuminated St Michael’s Bridge, which is reflected in the waters of the Leie; to the left, the walls of the houses and St Michael’s Church right by the water; to the right, the quay of the Predikherenlei. The lights on the houses, the bridge and the church lend the whole scene a magical atmosphere.

September 2021. The snow has fallen early and covers the higher elevations with a thin layer. From 3,000 metres, you look down on Lake Sils, in the Upper Engadine valley at 1,800 metres. Light clouds hang in the air, lightly obscuring the view. In the foreground, the snow-covered rocks of the Corvatch massif; in the background, the foothills and slopes of Piz Lagrev ; and the lake in between.

A metre-wide path winds its way through a thicket of scrub, rising from the middle of the lower section of the photo to the middle of the upper section in a gentle S-shape. Because the path is light in colour and the sunlight filters sparingly through the foliage, the path is much brighter and the surrounding thicket is quite dark; the path seems to come alive.
