The boss is engraved with the sacred monogram IHC [Jesus]. The mounts are engraved, 'Hold yowre tunge and say ye best and let yowre neyzbore sitte in rest hoe so lustyye God to plese let hys neyzbore lyve in ese' (Hold your tongue and say the best // And let your neighbour sit in rest // He is so eager to please God // He lets his neighbour live in ease). Verses like this, emphasising religious and moral duties, were considered appropriate for drinking vessels as a warning against indulgence.

Roundel featuring a scene of the Attack on the Castle of Love, from circa 1320-40. Made in Paris France on Elephant Ivory. In this particular image we see knights attacking the castle whilst women of the castle hurl roses at them. The top of the castle is perched the God of Love with his bow and arrow.

This roundel seemed a fitting medieval artefact to include in our discussion of Valentine's Day.

One of the oldest extant illustrations to picture witches, dating to 1451 in Le Champion Des Dames. Features two women, one on a broom, the other appears to be on a pole of some kind.
