Quest 64 (Nintendo 64, 1998) Released in 1998, Quest 64 holds the distinguished honor of being the Nintendo 64's first RPG in North America, a title that sounds much more impressive until you actually play it. Players take control of Brian, a young mage on a quest so forgettable that even Brian occasionally seems surprised to still be on it. With its sparse story, repetitive combat, lonely empty world, and cast of approximately three people and a sheep, Quest 64 somehow transformed an epic fantasy adventure into a lengthy walk through rolling hills while wondering if the game forgot to load the rest of itself. To be fair, its magic system had some interesting ideas, but those ideas were forced to carry the entire experience on their backs like overworked pack mules. Today, Quest 64 remains a fascinating piece of Nintendo 64 history, serving as a reminder that being first does not always mean being best. In fact, if this cartridge accidentally fell into a garbage can, many retro gamers would simply nod respectfully and conclude that it had finally found its true dungeon.
