From The Times: Adding all these up, welfare spending has increased by about 0.6 per cent of GDP, health 1.1 per cent and debt interest 1.8 per cent, since before the pandemic. Those three, together with a 0.8 per cent of GDP increase in public sector net investment - capital spending, some of which will be on the NHS - account for the lion's share of the six-percentage point of GDP rise in public spending relative to GDP, most of which had occurred by the immediate aftermath of Covid. The upshot? A higher debt interest bill is certainly the biggest element in the increase in government spending since before the pandemic and has thus played the largest part in increasing taxes
