I decided to watch The Long Voyage Home for Greg Toland’s cinematography, one year before he shot Citizen Kane. But it was intriguing too as a John Ford film with John Wayne that’s not a western. The crew of a commercial ship navigates the U-boat-infested waters of WWII, and their own demons.

Indeed this film has beautiful shadows and smoke: a true visual delight. And surprisingly, Wayne barely speaks at all, and when he does, it’s with a Swedish accent.

I'd unhesitatingly recommend Ford's largely unsung gem to anybody.
