On identity and belonging For a majority of Canadians from all backgrounds, both Canada and their ethnicity or race are important to their own sense of identity. 82% of Canadians say they have either a very or somewhat strong sense of belonging to Canada. Three in four Canadians agree that they feel their cultural identity is respected in Canada today. Still, one in four (25%) Canadians feel pressure to hide or downplay their cultural identity (more common among younger Canadians).
On immigration One in five Canadians express wholly positive opinions about immigration. They see welcoming immigrants as part of their vision of the type of country that Canada should be. Notably, by a four-to-one margin, Canadians prefer a system that selects the best immigrants in terms of education and skills, regardless of which countries they come from. About one in three express wholly negative opinions. 36% has mixed views, expressing concern about the number of immigrants currently arriving, but agreeing that Canada should be a country that fully welcomes immigrants from around the world.
On multiculturalism 64% of Canadians provide a response that describes multiculturalism positively Only 6% describe multiculturalism negatively 30% opt not to provide a response 66% agree that “multiculturalism has contributed positively to the Canadian identity.” *One in four (25%) disagree. *Even among Canadians who currently hold more negative opinions about immigration, a majority (about 3 in 5) has a positive opinion about the impact of multiculturalism.

Honoring these diverse, non-monolithic histories requires learning and unlearning, deep collaboration, co-governance, active listening, and an unwavering respect for Indigenous self-determination. Walking this path means dismantling colonial frameworks and working together to build a shared future rooted in sovereignty, reciprocity, and justice.
National Indigenous Peoples Day offers a vital space to reflect on the foundations of migration research and the enduring realities of colonial borders. To truly bridge divides through decolonization and reconciliation, academia must confront how these artificial lines have disrupted Indigenous sovereignty and ancestral connections to traditions, land, and water.
As a research program dedicated to building inclusive societies for migrant communities, we recognize that true academic progress is impossible without addressing historical and ongoing colonial realities.
