Deeper than everythingism, our institutions lack agency. Our machinery of governance has been tailored for consultation not decisive action. The Lower Thames crossing, finally approved, has spent years and £300m in planning. A decision delayed and avoided and a road unbuilt.

All this means no one person or even institution can take responsibility. NHS IT systems are decades out of date and failing doctors and patients, but attempts to fix them get bogged down in cycles of competing fiefdoms and petty squabbles. No one is ultimately accountable.
