«To be honest, though, I did not expect Hildibrand Manderville to be still alive.» Amarie snorted in her cup of tea. «Looks like he spent… I don’t even know how long… believing himself a zombie!» Shayka covered her mouth and laughed. She remembered X’cirha mentioning a younger Hildibrand in his childhood letters, and he had been almost traumatized as a little kid by the bumbling, extrovert older boy. She wondered how he had to be as an adult.

X’cirha tried his best to remember the story how Shayka had read out loud to him the first time. He had had the chance to listen to it and read it again during the years, but that moment in his childhood had been the time in which that old tale had become his favourite – and the fae would probably savour it more, as a recounting of a childhood memory. «Now, a long, long time ago, when the sun and the stars still glittered in the sky…» He figured the people of the First would appreciate a more familiar comparison. «… there were two worthy brothers, traveling the stars and fighting monsters and helping the people wherever they went.» Zepp’s ears twitched as he recognized the familiar tale of heroes. Minfilia stayed still, quietly listening. The pixies floated in midair, their wings flapping lazily just to keep them afloat as they paid attention. Childishly frenetic as they were, as former children they could not really help when a grown-up was telling a faerie tale. Feo Ul was the closest and hardly even moved, even more enraptured by the new story because it was their sapling’s. «They loved each other so much, just as much as they loved the world around them, and their dear ones, and the lives they led, and the ground under their feet and the sky above.» It had not been in the story, but X’cirha felt like he had lived those times – those few brief days in which he thought his life could never be better, never change, and never change him – and he felt like he had to say those words. «And people hailed the two worthy brothers as heroes wherever they went, for even though they only tried to do good, to take care of all people as if they were their neighbours, that is often a kindness few people bear on this star.»

Hey.» «Hello there,» X’cirha shrugged and put back a book on a shelf. «Weren’t you supposed to be resting?» «I was.» Shayka made a grimace. «But after what happened yesterday, I can’t really get myself to sleep… and Haurchefant sent another Moogle. The garrison questioned the survivors of the attacked caravan… and the situation is worse than we thought.» «Iceheart and the heretics?» X’cirha tilted his head. «Let me guess… dragons are involved as well?» «You’ve been sworn in the Dragoons, Cirha. You’ve been given Ishgardian education – about the Dragonsong war and the great wyrms… Haurchefant said you’d know about Saint Shiva.» Saint Shiva? X’cirha wondered why Haurchefant had mentioned her… according to the books Alberic had made him read during his training (and he had often needed an explaining from Heustienne about some archaic wording or boring passage), Saint Shiva had been the first heretic or something. Apparently, she had committed the cardinal sin of… having… intercourse with a dragon. «The wench of the wyrm, the Enchiridion called her,» X’cirha sighed. «So what, those crystal-stealing heretics are devotees of this saint? And?» The terrified, matching expressions with which Shayka and Minfilia reacted made him realize what he had just said out loud without almost thinking. Devotees of this saint.
