My/our comments First, I think one must question why a bill such as this might be introduced now, in this moment in history• Trans people, who are the real target of this bill, have been living our lives alongside our fellow New Zealanders, for as long as this nation has existed and, no doubt, long before. Until very recently, few seemed to have too much of a problem with us at all. Trans people are only the latest scapegoat in the "culture wars". There is no reason to introduce an unnecessarily narrow and quite useless, not to mention circular, definition across our legislation. The more we narrow our terms of reference, the more useless such definitions become in describing complex ideas. Our society flourishes when we make room for complexities. Gender and sex are complex, diverse, complicated notions that defy such efforts in simplification. As a society, we need to come up with solutions together regarding how we might live with and alongside each other with dignity and respect, without boxing ourselves in with such retrograde and simplistic conclusions. Passing this bill would harm us all. V My/our recommendations Disregard this bill and its contentsin its entirety
