Electric vehicles have been mildly successful, largely depending on the car, the automaker, and the level of incentives in the buyer’s location. But in the used car world, incentives largely disappear and the market is forced to contend with an oversupply of cars that wouldn’t have existed if it weren’t for major price breaks when they were new – and it’s almost amazing how quickly EV demand evaporates. We recently sold a 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S with 30,800 miles – this is a 562-horsepower Porsche with a $154,000 sticker price five years ago – for just $54,000. This feels like a bargain, but the numbers suggest it’s going to continue the sharp decline in future years. I’ve noticed this with basically every electric vehicle – Lucid, Tesla, the Hummer EV – and I suspect it won’t change as long as government and manufacturer incentives continue to inflate the new supply of EVs, resulting in a glut of extra cars on the used market. Interestingly, surprisingly notable exceptions are the Rivian R1S and R1T, both of which have held their value better than I’ve expected – suggesting it is possible for an EV to follow a (relatively) slow depreciation curve.
