Hmm, spot the difference between the preface to Beeson’s Primer of Medieval Latin (1925) and the blurb for the 1986 reprint! Yes, alright, I’ve made this too easy. (And no, the asterisked footnote to the blurb doesn’t explain that this “text book” is just an anthology.) #medievalSky #medievalLatin

The serious point here is that there is a real shortage of Latin textbooks and university programmes for medievalists that *genuinely* acknowledge that students these days will usually be complete beginners. Mostly we just carry on as if there hadn’t been a sea change in the past 50-odd years.
