Chapter One It was a gloriously warm Spring morning in Beacon Hill and Ella was working a case when the serial killer first reached out to her. As it was a Saturday, bright and sunny, the tourists were out in force to stroll the historic cobblestone streets in the path of America’s fiercest revolutionaries. Her assignment was nothing special, just another cheating husband of a wealthy woman. Since she had enough photos to show violation of the pre-nup already, Ella switched from the camera app to take the call. “This better be important, Billy,” Ella said into her Hello-Kitty-cased phone. “I’m on someone.” She placed Happy on the red-brick sidewalk and the little Pomeranian whined in protest. Her mark and his new female friend had paused long enough in the doorway of one of the Federal-style houses to swap spit again, so she turned her back to them for a moment. “You need to get back here now,” Billy declared. “What the fuck do you mean, NOW?” Ella said quietly into her phone. Proper pre-teens didn’t use that kind of language in Beacon Hill. Not that Ella was either proper or a pre-teen. She found it easy to pose as one, though, and since none of her marks paid attention to annoying pre-teen girls, that was handy in her line of work. “If you don’t want me triaging your clientele, hire a secretary. But, Sweets, you got serious money here looking for you.” “I’m on serious money right now…” Ella started. “Nah, you got mid-town rich widow money. What you got pacing the floor here is West Yarmouth, Great Island money.” “Who is it?” Ella asked. “Won’t give a name, but gave me five hundred bucks to call you, so get your butt back here.” “I’m coming,” Ella said, placing her Hello Kitty phone back into her white, fuzzy clutch purse on its long, golden chain. “Come on, Happy,” she said to the tiny black and white dog as she tucked it under her left arm and headed for her Toyota. They snuck Nickolas Brockman in through the doctor’s entrance and into Zahi’s office outside the emergency room. Several sets of x-rays and CT scans were on a light board. “Are you sure?” Brockman asked, trying to disguise how ill at ease he was. “Dutch, nothing else could explain this,” Yogi said. He pointed to an x-ray of a skull. “Dr. Walker’s x-ray when he first arrived showed a subdural hematoma.” Seeing Dutch didn’t understand, Yogi added, “He was bleeding in his brain.” “Well, that would explain his odd behavior, wouldn’t it?” Dutch asked hopefully. “Look at his CT scan here,” Zahi pointed. “It was taken before Dr. Walker attacked me.” “I can’t read these things,” Brockman told him, impatiently. “The subdural hematoma is gone. It’s as if it repaired itself.” Zahi stopped. “No, it’s more than that. It’s like the injury never was. There’s no scarring. No sign of ischemic damage.” Zahi shook his head adamantly. “No, there is nothing that could explain that…except…” “Except the unthinkable,” Dutch completed for him. Both Yogi and Zahi nodded their heads in agreement. “You think he’s joined with one of them,” Dutch clarified. “Or both,” Yogi confirmed. “And where is he now?” Dutch asked. “I have no idea,” Yogi muttered. “So, we have a nearly omnipotent ghoul loose in Cairo? Or is he still in the tomb? “I have no idea,” Yogi said again. “The first thing we need to do is find that tomb.” “Can you get the GPS locations of where they were today?” Dutch asked. “I took readings at their campsite myself,” Yogi admitted. “We have to get them out of Egypt,” Dutch said, pointedly. “And fast. Most especially before Dr. Walker and the boy come to their senses and start announcing the magnificent tomb they’ve discovered.” He turned to Zahi. “How quickly can the boy travel?” “I won’t know anything until tomorrow. He certainly can’t go anywhere tonight,” Zahi answered. Growing nervous despite his skepticism, Zahi asked, “The two of you really b…
Seth Walker's life is complicated for a young boy in Memphis. He lost his mother at six, his father is seldom home, his grandmother has Alzheimers, and his three best friends, the Tinker boys who live next door, are constantly inventing new ways for them all to get into trouble. The last thing Seth wants to do on his final days of summer is visit his Grandfather Walker in Egypt. Seth’s world is turned upside down when he accidentally tumbles into the tomb of the man his grandfather has been obsessed with finding for over forty years: Imhotep, the architect of the Step Pyramid near an ancient city also called Memphis. Finding not only the tomb, but the lingering ghost of Imhotep as well, Seth sets out on an adventure that will take him around the world and to the brink of death in order to complete Imhotep's mission: Destroy an ancient technological device of immense power, or risk the destruction of planet Earth.
“What makes you think this might be Imhotep’s tomb?” Bones asked. With greater ease this time, he removed the trident and sent another oversized hunk of rubble sailing over his shoulder. He paused, gasping again from the effort. “Because, on this side, this place is looking much newer. Like some late Roman burial. Definitely not Egyptian.” Imhotep slinked closer to Seth, pausing by his sarcophagus and listening intently to the two beings who had invaded his sanctuary. Seth took several deep, gasping breaths before speaking again. “Well, on this side there’s a sarcophagus.” Another huge hunk of the rubble wall was flung over Bones’ shoulder. “Really?” Seth laughed despite himself at his grandfather’s incredulous tone. “Unfortunately, yes." Sinking the trident into the wall once more, Bones asked, “What’s it look like?” Bones waited for an answer but it was getting far too hard for Seth to breathe, let alone talk much. “How about I just take you a picture?” Seth asked. There was a hole in the wall of rubble nearly large enough now for Bones to put his head through. Hearing Seth’s labored breathing, Bones said, “Yeah, you do that, Sport,” and sank the trident into the rubble again. Seth located his phone, turned on the flash in the camera app, and put the sarcophagus in its sights. When he snapped the photo, in that quick flash of light, Seth thought he saw…Seth gasped, gulping air, and then held his breath. He snapped another picture. And there it was again. A form…was that a shadow of a man? The boy’s voice was trembling with fear now. “Popsie?” Seth croaked. Bones was resting until he caught the tremor in Seth’s voice. “What’s wrong, Seth?” “Popsie, I think there’s something in here with me.” Seth flashed the camera one more time and the form was moving now and directly towards him. His hands began to shake so violently the phone toppled to the floor of the tomb.

"What is a phone?" Midnight asked. Seth reached in his suit pocket with his cast-free left hand, pulled out his cell phone, and held it up in the air for Midnight to see. "This is a cell phone." Midnight glanced at Seth with renewed interest. "So, that is more than just a camera." It was not a question, but Abby answered him anyway."Yes, Imhotep. A phone uses radio waves, or inaudible sound waves to function as a communications device. You can use Seth's phone to talk anyone, anywhere on the planet." Nodding his head in wonder, Midnight began to smile and then his smile became a chuckle. "Mystery solved. It was by neither magic nor miracle the boy cleared the Gateway of Anubis. It was harmonics." There were just as many murmurs now, but these were more of the aha variety. Abby returned the ancient tuning fork to Yogi. He took it and turned to leave, but turned back with a smile on his face. It did Abby's heart a world of good to see a little bit of the old Yogi, a man she thought she had known. "That's why we had to quietly use the key to open the Gateway of Anubis." Midnight chuckled. "Yes, Yogi Abba, son of mine. With Dr. Abigail Thornton's help, you might have even survived to reach my sanctuary." Midnight turned his big, golden eyes back to Seth. The cat winked at him again. "Does this device do anything else of wonder?" "Well, you can play games on it. That's what I was doing, really," Seth answered. "Games?!" Midnight asked, completely astounded now, and unable to contain a whopping smile, which looked very strange on a cat's face, but caused Seth to grin, just the same. "This wondrous device is so commonplace as to be a boy's plaything?" Midnight could no longer contain his laughter. He bellowed it out, and the childish joy of it bubbled and bounced around the room. It was warming, and a contagious sound, and soon they all were laughing with that big, black cat who was playing host to a ghost five thousand years gone.
