Mist crawls from the canal and blows towards the right. Of distant trees, only the top can be seen because of the low mist. The clouds in the sky are reflected in the calm water of the canal. The sun (finally) managed to break through the clouds and is illuminating the entire scene.

A road through the woods near Gasselte, Drenthe, The Netherlands. After a day of rain, the sun made its first appearance about an hour before sunset. As a result, a fog quickly appeared, creating rays of light through the trees. The sunlight is coming from the left of the image. On both side of the road, trees are standing tall in their autumn foliage. Brown leaves are on the ground everywhere, but the road remans visible.
The futuristic looking building L'Hemisfèric in Valencia Spain, photographed from the Pont de Montolivet. From Wikipedia: L'Hemisfèric (1998) – an IMAX Cinema, planetarium and laserium. The building is meant to resemble a giant eye, and has an approximate surface of 13,000 m2 (139,931 sq ft). The Hemisfèric, also known as the planetarium or the "eye of knowledge", is the centerpiece of the City of Arts and Sciences. It was the first building completed in 1998. Its design resembles an eyelid that opens to access the surrounding water pool. The bottom of the pool is glass, creating the illusion of the eye as a whole. This planetarium is a half-sphere in a concrete structure 110 meters (360 ft) long and 55.5 meters (182 ft) wide. The shutter is built of elongated aluminum awnings that fold upward collectively to form a brise soleil roof that opens along the curved axis of the eye. It opens to reveal the dome, the "iris" of the eye, which is the planetarium or Ominax theater. The structure is divided in half by a set of stairs that descend into the vaulted concrete lobby. The underground spaces are illuminated with the use of translucent glass panels within the walking path. The transparent roof is supported by concrete arches that connect to the sunken gallery. There is a remarkable echo in the building and if two people stand at the two opposite pillars inside of the eye they can speak with each other.
Aurora Borealis is rarely visible in The Netherlands and when it is, it is usually limited to some purple hues right above the horizon. On this night however, the aurora was shining bright and high in the sky. The image shows a house and a windmill with a fence from the lower right corner leading the viewer to the windmill. Streaks of green to purple are in the sky, from the horizon all the way up to the top part of the screen. A typical Dutch scene, except for the aurora.
The Tasman Tower apartment building in Groningen, The Netherlands. Photographed during the blue hour, with the wind pushing the clouds away from our vantage point. The jetty and bollards, together with the movement in the clouds, bring a great sense of depth to the image. There is an opening in the clouds right above the apartment building and the (tungsten) colours shining through the windows of the apartments match very well with the deep blue colours in the sky. The clouds are very thick, giving the whole scene an ominous look.
Snow on the peaks of the mountains in Glencoe. We are following river Etive as it meanders towards the mountains. A low hanging cloud is passing by the mountain. Pieces of the landscape are illuminated by the early morning sun, finding its way through the cracks in the clouds.

The so-called "Wadpost", a small but tall structure designed to provide shelter, on the Engelsmanplaat sandbank in the Wadden Sea in the province of Frisia (Friesland) in The Netherlands. The sandbank almost completely disappears under water when the tide is in (ie high tide). It's close to sunset and golden sunbeams are bursting through the clouds to the left of the Wadpost. It's low tide, but the sandbank is still wet and the sunlight is reflected everywhere on the sand. The clouds are dark and not long after this photograph was made, it started raining.

The Elbphilharmonie (Elbe Philharmonic) in Hamburg, Germany. The sky makes for a stark contrast with the buildings. The long exposure also smoothes out the water, turning the whole photograph into something more abstract.
Windmill "The Helper" is reflected in the water of Lake Paterswoldsemeer near Groningen, The Netherlands. Because of the long exposure, the water looks silky smooth. It is way past sunset and lights are illuminating the windmill. There are no clouds in the sky and even the blue sky is reflected in the water.
An image showing a pond at nighttime, with the still water reflecting the skies above. The Perseids meteor shower were at their peak for the year. For seeing and capturing the meteors, having moonlight and clouds is usually not a good thing, but it does make for a great image with the clouds forming streaks because of the longer shutter speed used. In the sky there are clouds and right above the horizon you can see the moonlight. To the left of the moon, a meteor with a bright but short tail is visible.
A foggy sunrise on a summer day in the village of Ten Boer, Groningen, The Netherlands. We look over the Damsterdiep canal towards the two windmills called Widde Meuln (Groningen dialect for white mill) and the Bovenrijge. Both are reflected in the calm waters of the canal.

The photo was made around sunset, with the last light of the day subtly hitting the left side of the castle. The tide is in and it is a very calm day, leading to very still waters. The whole scene, including the castle, a tiny island, the mountains in the background and the clouds, is reflected in the water.

Around sunrise, with the sun coming from the side, the scene is looking very spectacular with the sunlight hitting the huge crashing waves, while the seastacks remain in shadow. Hundreds of seagulls can be seen flying around the seastacks. The sky takes on a golden yellow color.
