screenshot from the may 12, 2026 recoveredfactory.net newsletter During my last year in a traditional newsroom, several reporters of roughly my vintage told me that they didn’t get into journalism just for LLMs to regurgitate their work, much less to optimize their writing for people using chatbots. Valid. It doesn’t feel great if your craft is writing destination stories for the web. The thing that shook me is that the folks saying this got into the business around the same time I did in the 2010s — they took the jobs of people who said they didn’t get into journalism to have their storytelling boiled down to a tweet or an IG post. The complaint recurs because the venues keep moving. The work is figuring out how to do journalism well in the venues you actually have, not the one you wish you had. That means treating the web as what it is now — a place where things get built and prepared and made remixable, where transactions happen, where the technology glues together other systems — and treating the platforms downstream of it as where the work, finally, gets seen.

We are aware of reports yesterday that ICE conducted enforcement operations in Ypsilanti connected to school pick-up and drop-off. Although our knowledge of this incident is limited to what has been reported by YCS and the Sheriff's Office, what has been reported is deeply disturbing. No parent should fear dropping their child off at school. Nor should families be deterred from accessing educational or medical services, or seeking help if they are in danger. That is why it is imperative that our Legislature quickly act on SBs 508-510, which would restrict civil immigration enforcement at schools, hospitals, courthouses, places of worship, and facilities that serve victims of crime. Forty-four years ago, in Plyler v. Doe, the Supreme Court ruled that a state cannot deny educational access to non-citizen children. To do so, the Court emphasized, would place children "at a permanent and insurmountable competitive disadvantage, for an uneducated child is denied even the opportunity to achieve." For the same reasons, our state must act to keep schools a protected space that all can access. After all, educational services can't be accessed if a child is kept at home. And learning can't take place in an environment of fear. I urge our legislators to act quickly on this important legislation, and to expand these bills to encompass school pick-up and drop-off as well.

WASHTENAW COUNTY OFFICE OF THE SHERIFF EST. 1823 ALYSHIA M. DYER, SHERIFF January 13, 2026 In the early morning hours of January 6, 2026, We can confirm WCSO deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call-for-service involving a suspect vehicle that was reportedly involved in a felonious assault in Ypsilanti Township. It was then reported that deputies located the suspect vehicle in the immediate area with no headlights on and attempted to make a traffic stop. A vehicle pursuit followed and then an officer-involved shooting occurred. The shooting resulted in the suspect's loss of life. Radio traffic from deputies on the scene during the incident communicated that the suspect had a firearm. Upon further investigation, it can now be confirmed that there was not a firearm found in the vehicle. There are still details unknown to us at this time due to calling for an independent criminal investigation in alignment with best practices for officer-involved shootings. The criminal investigation is being led by Michigan State Police. The deputies involved were placed on leave following the incident and we are cooperating fully with the ongoing criminal investigation. We recognize the gravity of this incident and the profound impact that any loss of life has on the community, the impacted family, and first responders.
