The following is a statement from Sam Hayes, executive director of the State Board of Elections, about the recent federal announcement about SAVE results for North Carolina: At the State Board of Elections, we take any evidence of ineligible individuals on our voter rolls very seriously. Last night, the Department of Homeland Security released information showing that SAVE identified 1,599 potential non-U.S. citizens on North Carolina’s voter rolls. These potentially ineligible registrations represent an extremely small percentage of the 7.8 million registered voters in our state. However, one ineligible registrant is still one too many. Therefore, we are developing a process by which State Board and county boards of elections records, as well as other available sources, will be researched for evidence that an identified registrant is eligible to vote. If that research is inconclusive, then the State Board will contact the registrant regarding their citizenship status. I want to assure the public that we are going to follow all applicable state and federal laws as this process unfolds. Each registrant will be afforded the appropriate due process before any removal proceeding is initiated. I also want to assure the public that this process will be transparent, and we will provide updates as new information becomes available.

Russian President Vladimir Putin “is concerned enough to address the fuel shortage publicly on state TV, insisting the Ukrainian attacks are ‘obviously creating problems’ but insisting ‘it’s not critical,'” BBC explained. There’s good reason for Putin to be concerned. “Russian gasoline output fell to a level equivalent to only around 65% of the ​seasonal average consumption after Ukrainian drone attacks led to stoppages at large oil refineries,” Reuters reported on Friday, citing “two industry sources ‌and Reuters calculations.” As a result of the Ukrainian attacks, Russia – long a major oil exporter – is now turning to imports to cover the gap and meet the demands. “Supplies of gasoline and diesel from Belarus to Russia hit a monthly record in June, while industry sources said last week that Russia had ‌started ⁠seaborne from India,” Reuters added. “Traders said that up to 6,000 tons of gasoline per day are delivered from neighboring Belarus to Russia. Stockpiles are also being tapped.” Russia is also taking the drastic step of considering bans on exports of diesel, gasoline and jet fuel.

What gains the Russians have made have come at enormous cost: Last month, Anna Keast-Butler, the director of British intelligence agency GCHQ, cited new intelligence indicating that Russian war deaths had likely reached almost half a million; various Western sources put total Russian casualties at significantly more than 1 million. In relative terms, the attrition losses are even more staggering. By some accounts, Russia is now incurring eight men killed or seriously wounded for every one lost by Ukraine. With average monthly casualties running at more than 30,000 this year, the Russian army is struggling to replace them with fresh recruits. It is offering sign-up bonuses as high as $80,000, and up to $140,000 in debt relief to encourage more men to enlist.
