A deceased bird lays on its back. It’s still dark outside. The flashlight is lighting up its wee body. The stick tail feathers that Brown Creepers use to scale trees are clearly seen as is its cute little curled bill. They look more like Gonzo. Adorable. Unique. Special. Important. And dying under unmarked windows in overly lit places.

Speedy!!! This super sleek (slightly dorky) pigeon was racing back n forth across traffic downtown Calgary and suddenly didn’t reappear. Lucky for him, he was dashing over a CUSRT volunteer (me this time! Kath here!) leaving a survey shift and she knew what had happened. Pulling safely over to the side, sure enough there was this bird. A tall white pigeon. Shocked as shocked can be! Poor dear ran smack dab into a pedestrian overpass. This absolute love led the world’s slowest footchase keeping JUST ahead of the net for a good half hour before being nabbed. Speedy was rehabilitated and later released.

Found on a Fall 2019 survey of downtown Calgary (near a 2nd one), a deceased Dark-eyed Junco is seen laying with its beautiful flashy tail feathers showing. It is laying on concrete next to a steel tree grate. The corner of a brown. rescue / collection kit is seen in the corner too. Please mark your glass. Speak with your building manager about following the CSA guidelines for window strike abatement. (CSA A460:19 National Standard of Canada)
These large glass windows first caught my eye as a risk (we can’t unsee all the types of glass we have found birds) but was thrilled to notice the dots! The glass is fully and beautifully marked with a bird friendly dot matrix. Probably #FeatherFriendly. Highlighting bird-friendly products in popular media is extremely important. It normalizes its presence, and hopefully inspires far more people to ensure they are not part of the problem. Please point out such observations and thank the producers.
