I don't think it's surprising that there's a large segment of Fromsoft fans who place great value on the studio's art direction so taking liberties was never gonna sit well with them. It's surprising to me that said segment seems to be there now, because, as pointed out, I really don't remember any real outcry against the remake when it came out, just general praise. Then again it's hardly the first time something like this happened to a game.
I think most would admit the remake is a very pretty game and technically superior, but because of that it's almost worse than a low effort port because it's almost perfect, but not enough and we're probably never gonna get another DeS remake like it ever again.
