We've had a formal response from Disability Minister Sit Stephen Timms to our open letter opposing disability benefit cuts. We can't say we're thrilled with it.

It begs the question: why wouldn’t you employ more of the people who truly understand such a large portion of your market?

: The UK Government from time to time finds itself in trouble with the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The present Government, in keeping with tradition, has just been written to by the UN, expressing concern at the cuts to disability benefits still in the proposals.

We welcome that the Government has recognised the damaging effect of the proposed PIP cuts on Disabled people, their families and carers and will now not proceed with changes until there has been a review of the PIP assessment process, involving Disabled people and their organisations. But serious cuts to Universal Credit for Disabled people are still there. Ministers should drop them too. The Government now has an opportunity to fully re-think its approach and work with Disabled people to build a social security system that supports, not impoverishes, them – in or out of work

Our letter: Dear Member of Parliament,
It is vital that opposition to the Universal Credit and PIP cuts Bill continues. The concessions proposed do nothing to protect those who will acquire conditions in years to come, and create an irrational two-tier system that cannot be justified by the evidence. Yes, it is welcome that existing Disabled claimants will not face sudden loss of their PIP, but, under the proposed system, new claimants with exactly the same conditions will be denied the help they need – poverty by stealth. And that will bring to future claimants all the knock-on effects on carers’ benefits, housing benefits, and increased poverty, which have caused so much concern to Disabled voters and their families. The Government’s Bill was proposing a similar two-tier system for the Universal Credit health element anyway, so there is no major concession there.
