Recently, I got a firsthand glimpse of how this environment is affecting faculty members. I met a professor for coffee at a Starbucks on NW 13th Street, right next to Gainesville High School, where I was a student in the 1990s. We weren’t discussing anything particularly controversial, but the professor was nervous; she only wanted to talk on background. After a while, we moved to a table outside so as not to be in earshot of anyone. A few minutes later, though, a woman came outside, ostensibly to talk on her phone. The professor was unnerved. What if this woman was secretly recording us? Why was she holding her phone behind her back, just feet from our table? Was this one of the nameless, faceless people who’ve been making a meal of discrediting UF over the past year?
New World screwworm infestations begin when a female fly lays eggs on open wounds or other parts of the body in live, warm-blooded animals. Most infestations occur in animals, but they also occur in people. The smell of a wound or body opening such as the nose, mouth, eyes, ears, or genitals can attract female flies. Wounds as small as a tick bite may attract a female fly to lay her eggs. One female can lay 200 - 300 eggs at a time and may lay up to 3,000 eggs during her 10- to 30-day lifespan. Eggs hatch into maggots that burrow into the wound to feed on the living flesh. After feeding for about 7 days, larvae drop to the ground, burrow into the soil, and emerg adult screwworm flies.

Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz is leaving his position at the university and expected to be hired as the president of Clemson University in South Carolina, sources told Gongwer News Service this morning. The Clemson Board of Trustees is meeting at 10 a.m. and has the selection of its 16* president on its agenda. Guskiewicz joined MSU in March 2024. Guskiewicz's exit comes a week after the MSU Board of Trustees approved an almost $1 million increase to his base salary. It also comes after a tumultuous period among the Board of Trustees. During the same meeting the salary increase was approved, trustees were asked to sign a new code of conduct. Two refused and have faced sanctions.
