that's so cool, I always heard rumors of the Mazda-powered touring cars but information was so hard to come by in the early 2000s. I remember when Mazda debuted the 626 MPS concept that would have fought the WRX and had a factory-turbo KL V6

I think the choice of the Mazda engine was because Mazda had all the basic stuff like valve/port angle (which you couldn't change, per the regs) right to begin with, so it needed less work for racing. Loved that 626 MPS concept. 626 was so bland, but that would've really turned it around!
