The pictures featured two women as they grew old together. They had travelled widely and seem to have had a charmed life. Her companion, I learned later, was the only child of a wealthy family, and when she died she left her fortune to my friend. Some distant relatives discovered her and began visiting her on a regular basis, ingratiating themselves into her life and her will.
