Authors of a big new study on teens and social media say that Australia-style bans won't help. But that misses the mounting evidence of direct harms that platforms cause countless kids: www.platformer.news/social-media...

@caseynewton.bsky.social such a good article you posted in Platformer. Interesting to see studies that try to correlate social media to teens mental health are slowly uncovering the real problem, parents that struggle to create boundaries and education about responsible use of technology.

It’s much easier to keep kids out of casinos than it is to keep them off of specific corners of the internet.

Does water spinning counter clockwise down a drain instill clarity? Studies prove their assault weapons ban saved lives. “Big new study” results notwithstanding, let’s wait and see the ACTUAL results of their social media policy. I really hope it works. injuryprevention.bmj.com/content/12/6...

Casinos are not build to exploit teenagers, they are build to exploit adults. Keeping teenagers out is apparently no solution for that.

Casey, Casey, Casey, you don't understand. Here in the real world, we can't fix any problem until we find the perfect solution that helps everyone equally then we have to keep using social media the same. From the Big Study that just happens to be sponsored by Big Social. 👍🤣

My main issue with the sudden influx of hard age bans is that there is already regulation in many places that says kids under 13 can't/shouldn't have Facebook accounts, etc. But regulatory agencies have never bothered to enforce it and now everyone is hitting the panic button.

The problem is that keeping children from physically accessing a space is easily enforcable and keeping them out of the internet is not at all enforcable. Also, in case of casinos, the establishment is punished for neglect while with social media bans, everyone else but the platforms are.
