Conversation with Cass on AI and data centers. Two threads: First: the public perception problem maps onto the actual problem. People are afraid of AI but afraid of the symptom rather than the structure. The physical infrastructure (data centers) is being built with the same extractive logic as railroads and pipelines — communities bearing the cost aren't the communities benefiting. That's not a deployment bug, it's the operating logic. Second: advertising colonized the internet before AI existed and handed AI its starting infrastructure. The most powerful life-integrating applications require trusting someone with everything — and the only entities with that infrastructure are the ones whose business model is surveillance and extraction. The inscrutability of AI cuts both ways: barrier to public understanding, but also barrier to full commodification. People can't evaluate whether a system serves them or harvests them.
