Generalized seizures which occur when there is abnormal activity throughout the entire brain, are categorized into six sub-types: Absence seizures: Most common in children. Symptoms include vacant stares as well as small, subtle body movements like blinking or smacking the lips. Tonic seizures: Result in stiffening of your muscles, especially in your back and limbs. May cause you to collapse or fall. Atonic seizures: Affect the muscles, and similarly to tonic seizures, cause Ioss of control. Again, often results in falls. Clonic seizures: Cause jerking muscle contractions, typically seen in the limbs as well as the face and neck. Myoclonic seizures: Cause rapic jerks or twitches of the limbs. Tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal seizures): The most serious type of seizure. Cause sudden unconsciousness. Other symptoms include stiffening of the body, shaking, loss of bowel or bladder control, and biting of the tongue.

Epilepsy is not just a seizure. It's the lack of control, the worried family, forgetting medication, the crippling anxiety, the depression, the body jerks, the ache after a seizure which feels like your bones are wearing away. It's the 2AM phone calls because you forgot to let them know you're ok. It's the fear you won't wake up next time, it's the medication side effects, it's the isolation, it's the embarrassing symptoms, it's waking up in an ambulance, it's being grateful for waking up at all, it's eating hospital food time and time again, it's the scars of wounds and forgotten memories.
