FOX RIVER COMICS CAMP AN ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL BY CATHY G. JOHNSON ; ILLUSTRATED BY CATHY G. JOHNSON ‧ RELEASE DATE: OCT. 6, 2026 Succeeds as a gently aspirational tale and how-to for budding artists. A versatile comics creation activity guide threaded with an encouraging narrative. Five young anthropomorphic creatives in training are attending Fox River Library’s comics camp, hosted by supportive Puma. The spunky quintet all differ in enthusiasm level and background—Pup’s here because “my mom signed me up,” while comics-loving Joey is enthusiastic about trying to make some—but they all encourage one another, as does Puma whenever they get frustrated. Puma’s lessons build from a foundation of enjoying drawing for its own sake and being willing to experiment, revise, and start over before learning about specific comics and storytelling elements. Imaginative art exercises break up the pace for the group and are color-coded by type, as explained in a rather pragmatic table of contents that invites readers to use the book as both a linear story and a toolkit for inspiration. Readers can make copies of the activity worksheets or use a QR code and URL to access PDF versions directly. Watching the youngsters navigate their separate styles makes for a winning narrative arc, brought to life by Johnson’s energetic cartoon art. The joy of creating comics is reflected in the characters’ expressive faces as well as their charmingly diverse final products, which may well inspire readers to invent stories of their own.
