The length, which is monumental if you think of it as a feature, but modest if you think of it as a TV series, was ultimately necessary. All the mundane moments are so essential to understanding the climax on an emotional level. I wish I somehow took actionable lessons on the current moment in American politics from this project. But that's not really how it works. I do understand more about what it means to be alive imon earth right now, and that is the highest calling of storytelling. One big problem is that there are almost no lines outside the original text, which may get you academic points for staging cleverness but surely doesn't help you introduce the outer characters, which is kind of essential to make this idea work. The end is especially confusing, and while I think I tracked the deconstructive intentions (Jackie Fox's beautifully rendered set suggests such a clash), I've no idea what statement Lyons was trying to make about marriage or relationships at the end. Maybe it was just about the danger of showmances.

During previews for “Arcadia,” when I was trying to understand Septimus as somebody living out his life entertaining himself, he came to me one night and said, “Oh, Billy, I want you to slide a feather between this word and another.” “A feather?” I asked. “Just the slightest breath,” he replied. “Oh, you mean you want me to get a laugh there.” He paused. “No, Billy, I don’t need the laugh. But a laugh is the sound of comprehension.” Which is a good analog to who he was as a person, using his capacity for charm and laughter as an invitation into the heart of his storytelling.

We didn't wind up on, to use a phrase from somebody else who will appear in this miniseries, we didn't wind up on the Appalachian Trail until the next spring or summer when she was 19 and a half, to keep the precise numbers in play.

I don't know the first thing about the Jeffrey Epstein situation, but I think in general that: 1) age of consent laws should be looked at more skeptically, 2) prostitution is not necessarily a bad thing, and 2) that based on my own personal experience of sexual activity when I was under the age of 18 with people who were over that age (initiated the contact, and did not reveal my age at the time) that some guy paying for a massage with a happy ending from someone he says that he thought was over 18 seems at least plausible. Age 13 is below the age of consent in my book, but 16 or 17 isn't necessarily so. But I don't read Krauss as in any way defending sex with a 13 or 14 year old girl. And I certainly don't think he has embarrassed scientists everywhere, even if he may in retrospect wished he kept his opinion of the matter to himself.

4.5 star Letterboxd review of A Confucian Confusion Watched Nov 6, 2025 Edward Yang had a beautiful, light directorial touch. No choice draw's attention to itself, but every shot and every is correct. The writing here is a tad heavy-handed at times compared to the others l've seen so far, but the often underlined themes are compelling enough to make up for that. I'm so glad it's easier to find in the US now!
