I’ve been a NASCAR fan as long as I can remember (at least as back as 2011) and it has always been a sport I have cherished. However, that sport I came to love in my childhood seems to be dying. The NASCAR Playoffs system is an embarrassment to motorsports. Plain and simple. Year after year not only has it delivered arguments on whether the resulting champion is the most deserving, but it also leads to flat-out chaos. Don’t believe me? Go back to 2014, when this format started – Ryan Newman doored Kyle Larson at Phoenix to cobble enough points to make it to the Championship 4. Kevin Harvick has to wreck Kyle Busch at Martinsville in 2020 for just one more point to save his incredible season. Just last week, there was a clear effort for race manipulation by the crews of Ross Chastain, Austin Dillon, and Bubba Wallace to get their respective manufacturer’s car in the Championship 4 (Byron for Chevrolet, Bell for Toyota).    However, none of these examples led NASCAR to self-reflect on what this format has done to the sport. Instead of awarding consistency like they used to, they reward chaos, “game 7 moments”, and inconsistency for the ratings and potential dollars it brings to the sport. Their inability to accept that there are major problems with this format is what has been spiraling NASCAR’s popularity for years. The way the drivers have to work within this format to become a champion makes an absolute mockery of what founded the sport. The old term “boys have at it” is effectively dead. None of this is to say you cannot still enjoy NASCAR. There still are a lot of parts to like about it, including the drivers and teams you support. The racing on certain track types. The thrilling finishes. The race day experience. But NASCAR’s unwillingness to admit fault on a legitimately broken playoff system might end up biting them with the older part of their fan base for good.
