He said he was aware of other former players who were struggling with their mental health as a result of their experiences in junior hockey. Some of them had the same stories he did about how young women had been treated. "I bet there's probably hundreds of cases out there that could still come out, maybe more," he said. "I guarantee you there are a lot of guys looking over their shoulders right now. especially once that trial in London gets started." »

« Gabriel explained to me that sex was such a huge part of hockey playing junior that he couldn't escape it. "It just seeps into you," he said. "And then it just became something I did. Through junior, I probably slept with twenty women, and then into eighty women. It was all pro hockey, my number got up to seventy or totally transactional. It's crazy, man. It's fucked up." According to Gabriel, the tradition he was introduced to in the OHL, of taking a lap at the end of practice to celebrate a sexual con-quest, continued after he was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the 2013 NHL entry draft and turned pro. "It was more of the same," he said. "I remember in pro, if the girl you had sex with was Black, you had to skate your lap backwards. If she was Asian, you had to take off your helmet." Gabriel paused and collected his thoughts. "I'm telling you, this kind of thing hasn't gone away," he said. I asked Gabriel how those experiences had affected him. "It's so easy to paint it all as harmless. Young guys and young girls just having fun. Looking back now, I can see the damaging effects." « One former player involved in the class-action suit alleged that when he played with the Winnipeg Warriors in the WHL in the 1980s, he was billeted with an older single man who repeatedly propositioned him sexually. When he complained to his team about what had happened, general manager Graham James threatened his career and told him to stop complaining and keep quiet. After he was eventually moved to a different billet home, the player learned that his former billet host, Edmund Oliverio, was a pedophile who had been convicted in 1978 of seven counts of gross indecency and one count of buggery against six teenage boys. Shockingly, the Warriors later placed another player in Oliverio's home. Another former player, who asked to remain anonymous and whose OHL career ended in 2014, wrote in his affidavit about attending a team training camp when he was a rookie in 2009. "Toward the end of the day, we went into the locker-room to take a shower," the player wrote. "All of the veteran players started saying, 'Rookie dicks, let's see those rookie dicks.' They lined us up, told us to strip naked and made fun of our genitals. I remember being particularly embarrassed by this, because I was only 15." The player also wrote about the "rookie dance-off," in which each rookie was required to do a striptease in the dressing older players until they were naked. room in front of the One former player, who had played in the OHL in the 1990s, wrote of a hazing practice known as "mashing." He talked openly about the struggles he had with issues of self-esteem and intimacy, which he believed were linked to his time in junior hockey. He described how years ago, at a WHL team party, he had watched a young European player sob as he was masturbated by a woman he didn't know. "He was forced to do it and just kept saying, 'Why is this happening? I have a girlfriend at home," the former WHL player said. He told me about "stakeouts," in which players on his team would pick up a girl and drive somewhere remote to have sex while their teammates, alerted ahead of time, were waiting at the location to watch the sexual activity take place. "These were just things that hap-pened," the player said. "They weren't considered outrageous. They were considered normal." The player also recounted his experience at an off-season junior hockey party where a player from another major-junior team was having sex with a young woman who was the sister of his teammate. While the player was on his knees behind the girl, another player quietly tiptoed out from a closet and "tagged in." He replaced his teammate behind the girl and began penetrating her without her knowing what was happening. "Some players were watching from a closet, others were watching from windows outside the house," the player told me. When the girl became aware of what had happened, she began sobbing and ran out of the house and down the street. »

He had made the mistake of sending a text message to a girl another player was interested in. The offender was told to strip naked and get in a garbage can filled with cold water and ice.
