Aldus Pagemaker spent years in the service of Archmage Othren Vale, a cantankerous and demanding scholar of the arcane. As a scribe in the grand library of Elderspire, Aldus meticulously copied spells, cataloged rare tomes, and fetched reagents for his master's experiments—often with little thanks and plenty of scorn. Despite his natural curiosity and sharp mind, Othren refused to teach him magic, dismissing him as "a pair of nimble hands, nothing more." Aldus endured the condescension for years, believing that patience and loyalty would earn him respect. But when Othren took credit for a minor spell Aldus had crafted himself—mocking the gnome’s ambition in front of the entire library staff—something inside him snapped. Determined to claim the power he was denied, Aldus turned to forbidden texts he had once been ordered to keep hidden. He pored over ancient contracts, whispers of patrons who could grant magic without years of tedious study. One name called to him from the margins of a forgotten tome, a name that pulsed with promise and danger. When he spoke it aloud, the candlelight flickered, the ink in his inkwell rippled, and he felt something vast and unseen turn its gaze upon him. The deal was struck—Aldus would no longer be a mere scribe but a wielder of power. Now, armed with magic of his own, he has set out into the world, eager to write his own destiny rather than transcribe the works of others.

Grizzle Thimbletooth is a stocky, battle-hardened gnome with a wild mane of wiry gray hair that sticks out in every direction, as if permanently charged with static. His thick, bushy eyebrows nearly obscure his sharp, mischievous eyes—one green, the other replaced with a mechanical monocle that clicks and whirs when he adjusts it. His face is lined with age and experience, but his wide, toothy grin reveals an unshaken love for chaos and invention. Despite his small stature, Grizzle is built like a boulder, with sinewy arms covered in soot-stained leather bracers and a patchwork of scars from both battle and failed experiments. His armor is a bizarre fusion of metal plates and reinforced leather, adorned with an assortment of gears, vials, and tiny mechanisms that clatter with every movement. His massive, double-headed battle axe—clearly modified with some kind of arcane or mechanical enhancement—rests on his back, its handle wrapped in intricate, self-tightening metal bands. His hands, rough and calloused from both smithing and smashing, are constantly tinkering with some new contraption, whether it’s a tiny, buzzing automaton or an experimental flask of something that definitely shouldn’t be shaken. Though his demeanor is often gruff and boisterous, there’s a sharp intellect behind his rough exterior, always scheming, always building, and always looking for the next great battle—or invention.
