Has umpiring for the past few years changed your perspective on the umps when you’re playing? It has changed my thoughts. Being behind the plate for four years now, as an ump, you’re not benefiting any team; you’re looking at it from both ways. I’ve gotten to understand the game even more. I’ve been playing baseball since I was six years old, so for 12 years. I’ve seen a lot of baseball, and obviously, I’ve argued with umps in the past. Now I see where they’re coming from, so I try not to talk back as much. Of course, I have a competitive side and won’t agree with every call, but now I can put myself in their shoes and know why they made the calls they did. Umpires are people too; we’re just out there to help them out, and the game won’t happen without them! I’ve had to yell at several parents this year — I tell them they don’t have to agree with my calls, but their kids don’t get to play if I’m not there to ump.
