DEFINITION:
- FUNCTION RETURN VALUE USED FOR TWO THINGS.
- BOTH ACTUAL RESULT AND ERROR SIGNAL•
- CAUSES CONFUSION. AMBIGUITY.
CLASSIC EXAMPLE:
find (array, item) → index or -1
- RETURN INDEX IF FOUND.
- RETURN -1 IF NOT FOUND.
- PROBLEM: -1 NOT VALID INDEX. MAGIC NUMBER.
- MUST CHECK RETURN VALUE BEFORE USE.
ANOTHER EXAMPLE:
dict.get (key) → value or None
- RETURN VALUE IF KEY EXISTS.
-RETURN NONE IF KEY MISSING.
- PROBLEM: WHAT IF VALUE IS NONE?
- CANNOT TELL IF KEY MISSING OR VALUE IS NONE.
WHY BAD:
- MIXES SUCCESS PATH WITH ERROR PATH.
- FORCES SPECIAL VALUE CHECKING.
- REDUCES VALID RETURN VALUE SPACE.
- ERROR PRONE. EASY FORGET CHECK.
BETTER SOLUTIONS:
- RETURN TUPLE: (found: bool, value: T)
- USE OPTION/MAYBE TYPE: Some (value) OR None
- USE RESULT TYPE: 0k (value) OR Err(error)
- THROW EXCEPTION FOR ERROR CASE.
RUST SOLVE THIS WELL. Option<T> AND Result<T, E> TYPES.
