The answer may lie in the diversification of PyShell proteins in Thala. While Shell1/2 are the major building blocks (mutant = no shell), Thala-specific Shell4 appears to help shape pyrenoid architecture (mutant = misplaced shell pieces). Both mutants have impaired #CO2 fixation and growth🧪🌊🧶🧬 3/🧵

Our model for how the PyShell enforces pyrenoid architecture to supply Rubisco with a high concentration of #CO2. The CO2-providing membranes are misplaced in the mutants. Comparing to CCMs in cyanobacteria and green algae, we ask whether the PyShell also serves as a diffusion barrier🤔 🧪 🧶🧬🌊🌾 4/🧵
