A selected quote from If Books Could Kill podcast episode on "Who Moved My Cheese", chosen to highlight the information one of the hosts, Michael Hobbes, found in the book "Downsizing America". Michael: This is exactly what we're getting into. So, for this, I read a really fascinating book called Downsizing in America, which was thunderously boring, but just like a list of all of the statistics about everything we know about downsizing, basically. And what's so interesting about all these mass layoffs in the 1990s is that most of these companies quietly hired more positions than they cut. So, company will announce, like, “Oh, we're cutting 10,000 jobs.” And then you look two years later and they've hired 12,000 people. There's a lot of reasons why these don't really work as far as stock price. I mean, a lot of the layoffs were being done very quickly. So, there's surveys of HR managers where they say they have less than two months to decide who gets cut.
