This album basically encompasses that sort of lighter EDM infused pop that you'd have found on early 10s Youtube that I basically am all over, add on some properly well done production, certified headbopper beats and just a smidge of enter shikari's The Spark esque synths and you've got what is a very well made and very enjoyable pop record French producer Marylou Mayniel could potentially go down in a few years in the same sort of vein as some of her country's most established electronic artists, your Jean-Michel Jarres, M83s, Mr Oizos of this world less dance bangers more trance-esque electro Side note: crazy how many ridiculously good electronic artists have come out of France, seriously just go look it up it's mad the list is basically an electronic hall of fame
This album feels like if Bloc Party's Silent Alarm was made by FKA Slaves - now Soft Play, but with more on the nose lyricism, still, when you combine those two sounds and add on the superb drumming of Jack Looker and the stellar bass work of Lilly Maciera-Bosgelmez - with that raw punk vocal delivery and stomping riffs from Phoebe Lunny, it truly completes what is realistically, a superb punk album
This album feels like if I liked those Creed/Alter Bridge type bands more, which checks out because it's Mark Tremonti the guitarist for both bands, the album seems to be a lot deeper and a lot better held together by the glue of the best version of that 90s/00s mumcore band sound
I previously had never heard of Cymande, frankly I cannot understand how. This is a band who's been around since the 70s making the exact funk and soul sound that will never die, who seem to have created one of the best versions of this sound in the year 2025! remarkable sound, very song feels like a best hits of your favourite late 60s motown sound with the funky wave that came in in the 70s, every single song had me tiptoetapping my way through the workathon. Highlight for the bass-face (<:o picture Shaq eating that one hot chip for visual recreation of the bass-face) being How We Roll - featuring Jazzie B. Despite that, my favourite song off the record ended up being the delightfully stirring Celeste feature on Only One Way.
Bloom achieves what it needs to which is that it is a deeply enjoyable, well mastered, well written, and well produced album. The songs left me feeling that sort of emptiness that blues often thrives in, and it's one that I feel most similarly resembles the internal feeling that K.T Tunstall's Other Side of the World provides. The clear standout being the song Little Bit which occupies exactly what I'm looking for in the sense of all the best that blues rock can provide, and the key change gave me goosebumps. a brilliant album
