In this closer picture, you can see humanity's attempt to stop the sea. A huge dirt berm runs parallel to the road in a spot where it has been washed away before. Every year, it gets harder to protect. Sea level rise, more powerful storms, and trying to stop inlet formation all dooms the road.
They will build a bypass causeway like the one up at Rodanthe.
