A huge dirt berm runs parallel to the road in a spot where it has been washed away before. Every year, it gets harder to protect. Sea level rise, more powerful storms, and trying to stop inlet formation all dooms the road.

This view of the inlet between Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands shows you what the ocean naturally does to the Outer Banks. It blasts huge holes and then pushes and pulls water through until the sand plugs it back up. It's natural for the inlets to go away and for new ones to form.
