There is a "weed" that has been targeted as a problem plant, but creeping/field thistle is used by bees to fill in the spring gap for pollen, as well as some birds like finches eating the seeds. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cirsium...

Kids should get to select a family of insects during biology class, and learn the differences between each. A bit of understanding of how and why we get different species is worth having. Personal favs are the ichneumon wasps.
We got visited by a couple longhorns a few days ago, in between rains. They are so cool! They were being a bit fiesty with the bumbles though...
