Very true, but there were some times when it could be worth it. Relinquished has had a home in some modern re-examinations of old formats, specifically in Chaos decks. For those, you need to be playing Light and Dark monsters, but Light monsters at the time largely aren't very good. One of the better options was Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands, the primary searcher for Ritual cards, so you could play Relinquished, both as its own boss monster, but also as a way of setting up the stronger Chaos monsters.
The thing about good fanfiction is (1) it usually is able to get away with assuming you have some amount of knowledge about the characters/world going in so they don't need to do exposition as much and (2) a lot of the best ones explore new aspects of the existing world/characters in interesting ways that aren't explored in canon. Aka not something you can just file the serial numbers off of to turn into an original story without making major concessions or coming out with a mediocre product.
