i like the theory, but it does not seem to be the case. here i am overlapping sprites and it's not hurting me. but maybe they only do the overlapping sprites rule when the enemy is airborne for some reason?

wait sorry i misread your post, like you mean either airborne or not airborne as a boolean, and *then* the sprite overlaps check. that could be what happens here

Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking. IE being airborne puts you into an airborne collision layer, and in your first video both you and the enemy were airborne when the collision happened. If either one of you had grounded then it wouldn't have happened.
