Thoughts and observations from streets and window seats

Baldwin Street in Bristol. Wide footways, two-way road with delivery bay inset and bus stop, low level planting and trees for shade, two-way cycle facility with clearly marked crossing points on desire lines. People are walking, cycling and to a lesser extent driving on the street
A street in Bristol, with a footway island where a bus stop and taxi rank are located, whilst a cycle track skirts around this. It looks smart and recently built. The edge of the cycle track and island have a strip of modern, smart, slender guard rail to reduce conflicting movements between pedestrians crossing to the island and people cycling - all pedestrians are guided down to the dedicated crossing point which is clearly marked with contrasting tactiles. However, the crossing point has zebra markings and red tactile paving to mimic a zebra crossing but this isn't legally a zebra crossing and in fact pedestrians wouldn't have right of way here, which could lead to avoidable conflict and upset

Before and after the delivery bay, a second cycle facility is marked diverging from the main cycle lane and up on to the footway, such that if a delivery vehicle was parked somebody cycling could continue without stopping by mounting the footway and 'undertaking' the delivery van. The effect is to narrow the footway at transition features and to have a short section if shared use footway.
