The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has issued an Areawide Air Pollution Action Day for Monday July 20th for portions of Illinois. This is in addition to the ongoing Areawide Air Pollution Action Day in effect today July 19th for the same areas. An Areawide Air Pollution Action Day is declared when weather conditions are such that widespread ozone and or particulate levels are forecast to be at or above the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) category in all or nearly all Illinois AQI forecast sectors. Areas both inside and outside of the Action Day coverage area are likely to see smoke/particulates to a varying degree and duration today and Monday with smoke likely decreasing from southwest to northeast through the day Monday. Those with air quality concerns or anyone in Illinois with outdoor plans is encouraged to check current NowCast readings or sign up for EnviroFlash alerts on AirNow. gov. Before going outside, checking the NowCast AQI will help identify periods of both poor and cleaner air quality regardless of the level of the daily 24-hour AQI forecast. A Chicago area "Air Pollution Action Day" is declared when weather conditions are such that widespread ozone and or particulate levels are expected to be at or above the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) category of the Air Quality Index (AQI) for multiple days. Ozone is expected to be the primary pollutant of concern although smoke/PM2.5 may also become a concern later in the work week. Active children and adults, especially people with pulmonary or respiratory disease such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor activity. Area residents are urged to reduce pollution levels. The officials at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management have declared an Air Quality Action Day, which remains in effect until midnight tonight. Air Quality Action Days have also been declared for Sunday and Monday. An Air Quality Action Day for smoke has been issued. Smoke levels are expected to be in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range. Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor exposure. Due to observed and forecasted high concentrations of PM2.5 readings in the area, recommendations are for the public to avoid or limit outdoor exposure to wildfire smoke, reduce or avoid exertion or heavy work outdoors and keep windows and doors closed as much as possible. These strong winds were located along a line extending from Midway Airport to near Calumet Harbor to 8 nm south of Hammond Marina, moving northeast at 20 knots. In addition, other widely scattered thunderstorms will continue to develop across far southern Lake Michigan, any one of which, could produce localized variable and gusty winds to around 30 knots.

The Purple Forecast Air Pollution Action Day is declared due to a forecast of Very Unhealthy-Purple category particulates today. Northern IL remains on the edge of a thick plume of surface smoke blanketing the Great Lakes and Northeast U.S. Forecasts for 24-hour AQI will remain in poor categories today even though condition may improve some through the day. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has issued a Red Forecast Air Pollution Action Day for today, July 17th, for the AirNow AQI forecast sectors of Rockford and all 6 Chicago area forecast sectors. The officials at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management have declared an Air Quality Action Day, IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT CDT TUESDAY NIGHT. An Air Quality Action Day for ozone has been issued. Ozone levels are expected to be in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range. Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor exposure. Here are some recommended actions that the public can take: * Walk, bike, carpool or use public transportation. * Avoid using the drive-through and combine errands into one trip. * Avoid refueling your vehicle or using gasoline-powered lawn equipment until after 7pm. * Turn off your engine when idling for more than 30 seconds. * Conserve energy by turning off lights or setting the air conditioner to 75 degrees or above. These funnel clouds protrude downward from the parent cloud, rotate or spin like a top, and last a few minutes before dissipating. The atmospheric conditions that these funnel clouds develop in do not support strong, damaging tornadoes. However, these funnels can briefly touch the ground and produce very minimal damage. If threatening weather approaches, move indoors to a place of safety. The National Weather Service will continue to closely monitor the situation.
