There are three main ways to use board wipes in Commander: • Defensive — This is when you're on the back foot and you're doing this in order to not lose to something overwhelming. You don't have the luxury of caring about losing your own resources.,, • Tempo — This usually means that you're doing it early when people have extended a lot onto the board and you haven't. The end result is that your opponents are losing a lot of resources while you're losing little or none.,, • Offensive — This is when you're able to make it asymmetrical, whether it's overloading a Cyclonic Rift or casting a Flawless Maneuver and then casting Wrath of God, and then pivot into a winning offensive position.,, I see a lot more of the first one than the latter two, which can definitely make games feel unfun and overlong. This seems to be where a lot of the stigma around board wipes comes from. Being able to leverage board wipes as a tool rather than a last resort is very strong in casual EDH.
