MicroCHIPs FAQ: Q: If my submission is successful, what will the deadline be for completing my comic? / A: We will set a deadline for approximately mid-late June for the completion of comics for issue #1 of MicroCHIPs. We will determine an official date once the submission deadline (May 15th) has passed and we have reviewed how many submissions we can accept. / Q: Will contributors to this project be paid? / A: Yes! Contributors will be paid £30 per comic page. This was determined by comparing the page rates of other UK-based small press publishers, taking MicroCHIP-specific factors into consideration, including preparation time artists may need to develop their comics for this project, and the page size artists will be working to. / Q: Can I submit more than one fun fact? / A: Sure! Please make a separate submission for each fun fact, as we would count those as separate comics. Depending on the number of submissions we recieve, we may accept both/all of your submissions!
MicroCHIPS FAQ: Q: I don't have a portfolio website, can I still apply to MicroCHIPs using a link to my social media profile? / A: Absolutely, as long as your social media profile includes examples of your comic work! / Q: Can I submit a pre-existing/already completed comic to MicroCHIPs? / A: Already-completed comics may not be suitable due to the format of MicroCHIPs and/or our submission requirements. These mini-comics will be printed at A6 so we'll need to ensure that text is legible at that size, and our submission form asks that you submit a source-backed fun fact on the MicroCHIPs issue topic that you would then create a 1-2 page comic about.
Two short single page comics about Ashling and Cat starting CHIP Collective. Ashling details how her school experience was tough with undiagnosed ADHD but upon starting university realised that she had an aptitude for storytelling, analysis and creative work. Ashling now does a lot of work in graphic medicine and information comics, working with doctors, researchers and charities to make scientific and medical concepts and terminology more accessible. Meanwhile Cat found that their grades weren't good enough to pursue art in university and took forensic science for two years instead. after two years they found themselves struggling still so left university, built a portfolio and retried for illustration. They graduate in 2016 with an honours in illustration and now teaches in institutions across scotland as well as developing their own creative practice.
