Whatever Will Be, Will Be is Felix White’s second book. Part memoir, part football travelogue. There are mentions of Fulham, which is what drew me in, but this is as much about navigating life and is genuinely moving. The Furthest Station is a novella in the Rivers of London series which I cynically read to keep my numbers up. It’s not essential if you’re into that series but it’s a decent tale and if you’re a completist (hello!) you won’t be disappointed.
Book cover montage. Sad Cypress is a decent Poirot tale. A story I didn’t remember from TV and was pretty hooked by as the story unravelled. Orbital was very slim but took me ages to finish. It’s well written but the sort of book I think I’d have enjoyed more by reading in extensive chunks. There’s no plot, it’s a story about perspective and the passage of time. Might be one to read again sometime.

May 2026 #bookstack #chopsbooks Home Sweet Hell - The final book in The Rooks trilogy was as excellent as the first two. I’ve raced through all three and found the characters really engaging and the story well told. It’s funny but still gets some serious points across. Gabby is writing a new trilogy (2 out, 1 to go) which I’ll definitely be reading soon. The Road To Wigan Pier - Tough read! This is a book of two halves, much like Down & Out in Paris & London which I loved. The first half describes the life of miners and goes into forensic detail about how they survived on very little money. It’s really interesting though not as well written as the first part of Down & Out. The second half is all over the place and at times pretty poor. There are some interesting arguments about socialism and the rise of machinery but other bits of misogyny and snobbery that undermine his points. Overall it felt messy and patronising. I really the Orwell books I’ve read before so this was a let down. #georgeorwell #gabbyhutchinsoncrouch #bookstagram

Montage of book covers. The Best Awful by Carrie Fisher - This has been in my to read pile for a very long time so I’m quite proud of myself for finally getting to it. This is a sequel to Postcards from the Edge which I loved, but is a stodgier read and I struggled to get through it. Basically an auto biography told as fiction, Fisher writes well but I found the story a bit too drawn out to ever get engaged. Eleven by Mark Watson - Not entirely what I was expecting from Mark Watson. There’s a quote on the cover about One Day by David Nicholls and that’s pretty accurate. Less humour than I was hoping for but a well told romantic comedy that was a lot easier read than Carrie’s book.
