Feeding traces from the caterpillar of Epinotia abbreviana (Brown Elm Tortrix moth) - the caterpillar hatches in the closed bud, then with its first meal it cuts this distinctive pattern, visible as the leaf unfurls.
An White Ermine Moth, named after the fur robes worn by English Lords. The robes are made from the coats of many dead 'Ermines', as Stoats are known as in their winter colours.
Dere Street, the old Roman road, crosses a minor Scottish road as it heads towards the Cheviots and England.
