Post-Elida, it stayed offshore and only hit us with 24 hours of thunder and lightning. We lost electricity a few times and the animals took refuge in their safe places, but no fires started in this area. Others may not have been so lucky. I don't know. Photographed 23 July 2026. Fujifilm X-H1.

Morning rounds, Thursday 9 July 2026 and it's also the first sunny morning in awhile, so lots of backlight. A pair of cat ears sneaking into the photo on the lower left just added an additional point of interest.

As I imagine it, two young birds, one Red-winged Blackbird, one Grosbeak, are brought together at breakfast to learn about friendship. My attention was brought here by a ruffling kerfuffle as a small brownish bird, possibly Mama Grosbeak, was aggressively chasing away a pigeon. Seriously, she was right on his tail. Experimental street photography: two exposures, about a quarter of a second and 1 stop apart. She was a happier, older version of Paris Hilton to me, and that's why she was so interesting. If I'd had more time, I would have done a more conventional portrait. If she was into it, anyway. Paris Hilton would be. Canon R100.

Incoming birdie. Merlin says it's a Red-winged Blackbird. I'm not so sure. But the larger Steller's Jay is ubiquitous here at the farm.
I think it's a young female Red-winged Blackbird at the top of the feed bin. She chased off two Steller's Jays to win the day. Below her is a Black-headed Grosbeak that I didn't even notice until I looked at the photo later. After this is posted I may add some of the struggle to get here, so check the comments later. Silver tabby farm cat. It's the end of second breakfast and kitty was hoping for more. Poor kitty. Poor me, really, because I spend more keeping these animals happy than ... Well, more then I will admit. One could rent an apartment for less. Sigh. No wonder I'm broke all the time. However, caring for the animals is a sacred duty to me, so I press on..
Very young Red-winged Blackbird, little but standing tall, was the first bird to feed this morning. Maybe young and dumb, but he managed to fend off a couple of Steller's Jays for awhile. It was adorable. Photographed the morning of 19 June 2026, a few minutes after the goat and cats photo I posted earlier. I put a reminder to read the alt tag - not because this one is anything special - but because sometimes that's where the stories can be found. And sometimes I think those stories are cool. Or at least they're a slice of life kind of thing, like the ALT of the goats/cats picture this morning... The cooling is welcome, probably. Today is overcast, with a bit of patchy fog. The birds are highly active this morning, and I'm hearing from Red-winged Blackbirds, Spotted Towees, Steller's Jays, doves and an occasional crow.
