And then if I strongly disagree with something, anyone that fights against that thing must be on my side. When you think like that, it’s easy to see disagreements as fights and people who disagree with you as enemies, and when you’re fighting an enemy there are no half measures. So, it isn’t enough to dislike or disagree with Biden or Trump — you’ve got to lock them up. It isn’t enough to criticize Israel — you have to align with Hamas. It isn’t enough to say that some people struggling with homelessness or addiction are threats, but that they’re literally enemies. This hyperpartisan framework flattens the world into comic-book narratives of good versus evil, and the right side versus the wrong side. Their graduate school had admitted 44% of their male applicants but only 35% of women. They hired a statistician to review their admission data, and nobody expected what they found. Their process was slightly biased, yes, but it favored women applicants, not men. After digging into the data, they realized that the admission rates for women were higher than for men in 4 out of 6 departments. Women preferred departments C, D, E, and F, which were more competitive. Very few women applied to departments A and B. This is another example of Simpson's Paradox, a phenomenon in which a trend appears in several data groups but disappears or reverses when the groups are combined. People hide behind phenomena like this daily to manipulate data to support any story they want...

First reader's comment of the linked article. Wayne Teel When I designed my own home, based on some adapted Frank Lloyd Wright "Usonian" designs, I talked with a solar guy about passive solar. His recommendation, which I took, was to calculate the summer sun angle and put an overhang on the roof that would keep all sun out of the house from mid-May to the end of July, but allow full sun entry all day from mid November to February at least. It works, and works well. In winter, on a sunny day, we hardly use any heat (Virginia - Shenandoah Valley). The straw bale walls and R50 insulation in the ceiling prevent heat loss. In summer that same insulation reduces solar gain, and the shade from the overhang keeps the sun from overheating the house. We still have no air conditioning, though the impact of global heating may change that sooner than we expected. Good shade from trees as well as awnings are a great value. Excerpt: According to police, a Dodge Ram 1500 Classic driven by a 28-year-old man was eastbound on Wyoming and attempted a left turn northbound on Front with a green light. A 31-year-old woman was crossing westbound on Wyoming in a marked crosswalk with a green light with her 13-year-old daughter and a 22-month-old girl in a stroller whom police originally had said was a 1-year-old. The Dodge hit all three of them.
