Dear Christoph: We look forward to welcoming you to Washington, D.C., for ACS Fall 2025. Earlier this week, the federal government announced oversight of the Metropolitan Police Department and the deployment of National Guard troops and federal officers throughout Washington, D.C. As a result, you may notice an increased presence of law enforcement and federal officers in the city. ACS Fall 2025 is proceeding as scheduled, and we do not anticipate significant disruptions near the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. ACS is actively monitoring the situation in coordination with local partners to ensure a safe and successful meeting experience for all attendees. Eine Mitgliederbefragung ergab eine Zustimmung von 69 Prozent für den Namen „Deutsche Gesellschaft für Chemie" bei einer sehr hohen Beteiligung von über 8000 Mitgliedern und über 2000 Kommentaren. Der Vorstand versteht die hohe Beteiligung und das Umfrageergebnis als Auftrag, im kommenden Jahr eine entsprechende Mitgliederabstimmung durchzuführen.
Ahlrichs war Quantenchemiker und hatte in seiner Arbeitsgruppe hoch anerkannte Berechnungsprogramme für molekulare Strukturen entwickelt. Er war groß gewachsen, selbstbewusst und hinterfragte wissenschaftliche Aussagen ebenso wie gesellschaftliche Zustände auf eine unbekümmerte Art und Weise. Gespräche mit ihm waren immer anregend. Gleiches galt für Professor Nick Handy aus Cambridge (GB). Dank seines britischen Humors konnte er bereits mit seinen Fragen das DDR-System ad absurdum führen. Als ich in den 1990er Jahren Frauenministerin war, lud er mich an sein College ein, um dort zu den Studenten über mein Leben in der DDR und die Deutsche Einheit zu sprechen.
