A 3 1/2⭐️ Book Review for Chasing The Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com: “A novel pretending to be a true crime story about a series of grisly murders of teenage girls that took place in the small Maryland town where the author grew up. Chizmar, who goes into the realm of meta fiction by placing himself as the main character in his own book, waxes poetic at length on the history and lore of his hometown, Edgewood, MD. In the end, I felt this book couldn’t really decide what it wanted to be, and so feels unfocused and lackadaisical. The authors’ voice, almost too familiar at times, lacks the drive and intensity to power the narrative forward or build the necessary suspense to keep pages turning. Also, not that it relates to his writing at all, but word amongst the horror community is that Chizmar and his Cemetery Dance Publications are shady and don’t like to pay authors their earned royalties. Unfortunately, there’s nothing of substance here for me to grab onto and so it never caught on or worked for me. The reader’s Texas accents are too funny, spot on really, but sadly truly distracting from the story. Part of my main issue with this audio production is with this lively, but distracting delivery. Cinematic, in grainy grindhouse glory. The homage to “Scream” is obvious, to the point of bald imitation. Still, I enjoyed Chen’s trope-heavy foray most when they are playing against expectations and breaking those trope promises rather than toothlessly playing along. Elegantly queer, as colorful as a Benetton ad, and lots of easter eggs and hat tips to its fore-slashers; this one can’t help but fall into the same traps despite its self-awareness.
