I couldn’t help noticing how much of Rory’s resistance seemed aimed at how Gary talks about the system, rather than what he’s actually saying. He kept circling back to tone, framing, and delivery- but rarely engaged the core economic arguments in honest and open exploration. It felt like the source of Rory’s opposition came more from emotional discomfort instead of a reasoned counterpoint. That makes sense in a way. Gary challenges not just ideas, but the entire worldview of the political and intellectual class Rory’s a part of- people with the freedom to study, speak, and govern from within elite institutions, but without direct exposure to the mechanisms of real economic power. ... At one point he questions whether Gary might be too shaped by class anger to see things clearly- but Rory himself seems triggered precisely because of his class position. His discomfort seems less about facts and more about the disruption of decorum- the rules of polite intellectual discussion that Gary unapologetically breaks. That, in itself, says a lot. I also suspect Rory felt somewhat undermined by Gary’s wholesale rejection of certain institutions and disciplines- particularly when Gary dismisses large swathes of economic theory and academic orthodoxy. Rory, who has clearly invested much of his life trying to work within those systems to create incremental change, may have heard that as an existential table-flip. It probably lands not just as disagreement, but as a challenge to the worth of his own efforts- as if Gary is saying the entire game was rigged which Rory spent years trying to play fairly. Outside of a few contrived bad faith arguments from Rory- it felt more about a deep paradigm clash. Gary speaks from the raw mechanics of lived experience and markets; Rory responds from the clouds of policy, philosophy and class decorum. Two very different vantage points- but only one of them is forced to live with the consequences of being wrong.
